Why a Garmin pool swim can miss a length.

Pool-swim distance looks simple on a summary screen, but a watch has to infer every wall from motion. This guide separates the setup and swimming habits you can check from the patterns that a FIT repair can cautiously review.

The basic model: lengths multiplied by pool size

A compatible Garmin pool-swim watch uses its accelerometer and the pool size you set manually to estimate lengths. If the watch records 40 lengths in a 25 m pool, the distance calculation is 40 × 25 m, or 1,000 m. That arithmetic can be correct even when the length count is not. A wrong pool-size setting therefore changes the distance for every recorded length; it is the first thing to check before investigating a single missed turn.

The watch does not observe a lane from above. It looks at movement, especially the change in stroke mechanics around a wall. A pause or turn pattern helps identify that a completed length has occurred. A strong push-off and a short glide create a clear transition, while stopping mid-lane, changing stroke for a drill, or moving an arm while resting can make the transition less obvious. The exact behavior varies by model, firmware, stroke, and swimmer.

Check the setup and the ordinary laps

Confirm the pool length

Open the activity settings and verify that the selected pool size matches the lane you used. Make the units agree with the pool’s actual measurement: a 25 yd setting is not interchangeable with 25 m. If the pool has a short-course and long-course configuration, check which one was active for that session. Fixing the setting helps future activities, but it does not rewrite an already exported file.

Use a repeatable wall pattern

When the workout permits it, keep a consistent cadence into the wall, finish the stroke, turn, and push off firmly. A clear push-off and glide give the accelerometer a stronger change in motion to recognize. This is not a demand to change a swimmer’s technique; it is simply a useful diagnostic. If every length in a set is short or long by a similar amount, suspect the pool setting. If one length is about two or three ordinary lengths long, suspect a missed turn or a pause that was recorded as part of that length.

Separate rests from active swimming

Garmin notes that interval/rest timing can occasionally be off by 5–10 seconds. A swimmer who holds the wall quietly may be easier to classify than a swimmer who adjusts goggles, sculls, or gestures while waiting. Arm movement during a rest can resemble swimming and interfere with the watch’s interpretation. If the session includes long rests, compare the timeline and the length durations before calling a long interval a missed turn.

Drills and unusual sets need extra context

Kick sets, pull sets, one-arm drills, sculling, and mixed-stroke work can look unlike the active lengths used for a normal pace. If your watch supports it, use the Drill Log for kick and drill portions so they are not mistaken for ordinary swim lengths. A drill may intentionally remove the arm movement or turn pattern that helps the watch close a length. The resulting FIT messages are useful evidence, but they may not support a confident automated correction.

Write down the set structure when a number matters: for example, “8 × 50 m freestyle, then 4 × 25 m kick, with 20 seconds at the wall.” A record that seems anomalous without that context can make sense once the set is known. SwimLapFix cannot recover a planned drill from a timestamp alone, so it may leave a mixed or ambiguous activity unchanged.

Patterns that are useful, and patterns that are not proof

A useful clue is relative to the same swimmer and session. SwimLapFix derives a baseline from active lengths, then considers only bounded patterns:

  • One unusually long length whose time closely matches two to four typical lengths can be a missed-turn candidate.
  • Adjacent short fragments whose combined time resembles one ordinary length can be a false-turn candidate.
  • A cluster of different durations, a long stop, or a drill transition is usually ambiguous and may be left untouched.

These clues are not sensor ground truth. A long length can be an intentional continuous swim, and two short lengths can be a real change of pace. The tool is deterministic, not AI: it does not infer intent from prose or claim to know what happened at the wall. Review the before-and-after length chart alongside your memory of the workout.

What a cautious repair changes

For a high-confidence candidate, the repair keeps the aggregate time and strokes for affected lengths, rebuilds relevant length, lap, and session summaries, encodes a new FIT file, and validates that file by decoding it again. The original upload stays separate. The output is a proposed copy, not a replacement for the source activity.

Preview the result before downloading. If the proposed distance or active-length count does not match the workout, do not import it merely because the file is structurally valid. Keep the original and report the expected totals through the report form when you want the case reviewed. Ambiguous swims may be more accurately represented by the unchanged original than by a forced correction.

A short checklist

  • Verify pool size and units.
  • Check whether the odd interval includes a rest, drill, or stop.
  • Compare a suspicious length with ordinary lengths from the same session.
  • Keep the original export and review every proposed change.
